It has been brought to our attention that the charity Help Musicians UK has created a fantastic new scheme for hearing protection within the music profession. Membership to the scheme includes: the opportunity  to receive a hearing test and custom made earplugs ( ideal for use in the pit or orchestra) for £40 (or £30 for Musicians Union members) per annum.

Protecting your hearing is vital, and as such hearing protection can cost upwards of £150-£300, it is something we highly recommend you take advantage of. For more information, visit: https://www.helpmusicians.org.uk/working-retired-musicians/musicians-hearing-health-scheme/cost-and-joining

We thank Mary Reid and Karen Vaughan for bringing this to our notice.

One of the most prestigious international harp competitions reached its climax last weekend, with three harpists of three different nationalities scoring top honours. In first place was Katherine Siochi (USA), in second was Elizabeth Bass (UK) and in third a Serbian player, Lenka Petrovic.

All three players ''wowed'' their audience and distinguished panel by performing the Ginastera concerto with full Orchestra. It was a very proud and auspicious moment for us here in the UK, for Elizabeth Bass is one of our most accomplished young players and herself a UKHA member, and former committee member! Elizabeth is a student of Skaila Kanga  at the RAM, having studied with Eleanor Turner beforehand.

We congratulate Elizabeth, all of the prize winners AND all the worthy competitors who have achieved so much just by preparing the competition, and its several stages of virtuoso material.

The UKHA was saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Jean Price, at the age of sixty-six. Jean was for many years an active performer on the London scene, where she was known especially for her work in the West End shows. She will be commemorated further in the next issue of HARP magazine.

For those wishing to attend her funeral, be advised that it will be held at 10.45am, Monday 11 July, at the Crematorium in Crediton, Devon. Our condolences to Jean's family and friends.

The UKHA is always looking for volunteers willing to help with certain aspects of the Association's work - there are various types of activity where we need extra pairs of hands!

You might be able to offer a few hours of practical help on the day of one of our annual events, such as the Christmas parties or the AGM, or you might be a dab hand at creating nice posters or online visuals. If you think you can help in any way and are keen to get involved, please get in touch with us at

    admin@ukharp.net

    - it can be as little or as much as you'd like!

The Harp Hub is a new website for sharing teaching and learning tips. Do you have a winning method for teaching trills, scales, half rolls, remembering the order of the pedals etc etc? If so, and you would love to share it with the harping community, please make a video of UP TO 1 MINUTE, demonstrating the tip, technique or the way you teach it. It is free to upload a video and you can choose whether or not to show your contact details, website etc. It's just for fun, no judgement is passed on the methods you use but there are some rules and regulations to follow. Email your video or any questions to Anna at theharphub@gmail.com
