A very warm welcome to the UKHA website!
The association was formed in 1959, and I have the privilege of being the President, following in the footsteps of our eminent Past Presidents; John Sebastian Morley, Sidonie Goossens, and John Marson. We are grateful to our members from around the globe for supporting us as we continue to expand the ways in which we can positively benefit the harp world, particularly in the UK.
Our members receive a magazine, HARP, twice annually, which is full of scholarly articles, reviews of concerts, CDs, and publications, interviews with a range of harpists, discussions, adverts and a plethora of information. There is also a calendar of harp events emailed to each member monthly, and our active social media strands work very well in expanding our network. There are opportunities to apply for bursaries towards work of all sorts, from putting on concerts to researching, buying specialist equipment and so on. Our extremely successful Emerging Artists Scheme is an opportunity for aspiring young professionals to be mentored on event planning and performance.
Members perform at our festive parties, where we listen to our younger harpists in a non competitive environment, have a live ‘audience with’, (look out for some of these on youtube), quizzes, raffles, food and fun! We celebrate special occasions, such as notable birthdays, the 50th anniversary of the UKHA in 2014, and the hugely successful first ever UKHA Jazz Harp Event ‘Wild Strings’ in 2018.
We have a small archive of materials, and we hold copies of each past newsletter and magazine, so ensuring that the history of this fine association is safe. We welcome donations, and these are always used to support the UKHA and its members.
Today, there is a huge range of diversity in harps, harpists and makers, shops selling harps, publications and recordings, and we must not forget friends of the harp! We aim to support and encourage everyone. We are YOUR association. We are here to help with suggestions, queries, or if you just have a story to tell, please contact us. We are always listening.. but also, we would be delighted to see you at The World Harp Congress, in Cardiff this Summer. What better place to meet up, renew old acquaintances, make new friendships, and become part of a more global harp world! The UKHA will be there to greet you.
I cannot end this welcome without thanking the volunteer committee for their immense commitment, and for working tirelessly throughout the year.
Thank you team UKHA!
